Congratulations! (a diatribe)

I’d like to take a moment

and acknowledge the enormous success

achieved by those magnates of

modern industrial society.

The battle was by no means an easy one

opposed by truth at every turn

motivated by nothing more

than the desire for financial gain

What stunningly ingenious fabrications

cut from whole cloth

how reasonable their presentation

made them appear

Integrity, morality, ethics

unhesitatingly sacrificed

on a golden altar

in the name of wealth

What glittering wonders

of technology

sold at exorbitant prices

you can afford to buy!

Still, with overflowing billfold

what coinage is required

for the washing away of stain

from a corrupt heart?

As the scales begin to tilt

and more days lie behind me

than those ahead

My thoughts wander

as they more often do

to those I’ve known and loved

whose names can no longer

be found in the book of life

I mourn the empty spaces they left

knowing those places will remain

dark and silent within me

I mourn my loss

Should I mourn theirs?

Their lost worry?

Their lost fear?

Their lost suffering?

Rather I rejoice

in their loss

in their release

Knowing One’s Self

To know One’s Self,

is a lofty goal, rarely reached.

We look into a mirror,

and flatly deny what it reflects.

We proclaim that we have no answer,

when our fear left the question unasked.

We justify our wrong action,

with excuses we don’t believe.

We take comfort in our ability,

unmatched by any species, to deceive ourselves.

How few among us,

will accept what is to be seen?

Will voice the question,

aware that though the answer may be painful,

ignorance is intolerable?

Will freely take responsibility,

for each of their actions?

Strange Dreams

Strange dreams,

fragmentally remembered by,

a conscious mind.

Containing characters,

long gone,

conversations that,

never were.

Recalled to vitality,

they speak earnestly,

of things I should know,

in language I can’t understand.

If only my mind,

could work the puzzle,

I would come to know myself,

returning them to their quiet rest.

Two Sides of a Coin

Raise your coin into the light,

on one side shadow,

one side bright,

Here we have, held in our hand,

a disc reflecting,

the duality of Man,

Look down deep,

inside yourself,

See it there?

In It’s repose?

Everything that you hold good,

shining out for all to know,

what lies in shadow,

out of the light,

are those things in you,

you’d rather hide,

We are taught,

these things are wrong,

that inside us,

they don’t belong,

Herein there’s,

a fallacy,

a cause of suffering,

that need not be,

Those dark traits,

which we’d deny,

serve us well,

through all our lives,

Were they not there,

within our sight,

we’d remain forever blind,

to love and light.

Uncrowded Paths

Gather up your courage, knowing it will be tested

Armor yourself in curiosity, willing to believe

lay aside your common wisdom, your preconceptions

They will not serve you here

Make your way past rusting chains and barricades

Placed so by guardians of today, left behind in a long ago yesterday

Here, overgrown, lies the shadowy path of the unfamiliar

It’s windings unmapped, it’s conclusion uncertain, perhaps undiscovered

On this day, like nearly every other, you’ll walk alone

Those that would cross your way have moved on, called by voices now silent

Seeing things unknown, hearing cries unrecognized

Further on, awaiting you among dark, decaying temples

The realm of unheard philosophies, of different equations

Drawn by different Gods
