Mead Making

The origins of the antiquated art of fermenting honey are lost in deep time. Where the first batch made it’s appearance, reported to be between 20,000 and 40,000 years ago, is a mystery buried in eons. Little chance exists that it will ever again be part of our living knowledge.

What remains to us, the process and practice of it’s making, forms a more direct connection to our history than any found among ancient texts. Consider that a brewer today may mistakenly ruin a batch in precisely the manner of a batch ruined 400 centuries ago. Difficult as it is for each to conceive the other’s existence, they are bound together by unbroken tradition.

With a history that can be measured in geologic time, it is right too that mead should derive from honey, the only food uncorrupted by passing years.

May Mabon bless the mead-makers of every age in turn, until the Cosmic day draws finally to it’s close.

USDA FOOD PYRAMID- An ugly truth

The new food pyramid recommends 2-3 servings of dairy products daily as part of a “healthy” diet.

I’d like to share a couple of facts regarding dairy products that aren’t well known:

1. The main protein in dairy products, casein, is promotional of cancer growth.

2. Dairy products cause an increased acidic environment in the human body. The bodies natural response to this is drawing calcium from bones to counteract the acidity.

3. There are no nutritional components in dairy products which cannot be found in healthier forms in vegetables and fruits.

Please don’t take my word for this, do your own research. The truth of the information is available, mostly couched in verbiage that makes it nearly impossible to understand, but still there.

Why is this information not general knowledge? Sadly, I’m sure you already know the answer. Misinformation is nearly always distributed for only one reason, Money.

I lost 24 pounds in 90 days with NO calorie restrictions!

It sounds like a sales pitch doesn’t it?

How could such a thing even be possible?

The truth is that this was the personal result I experienced. My excess weight continues to decline, and I don’t want to sell you anything at all. I didn’t follow any of the widely advertised diet plans, took no supplements, or engage in increased physical activity beyond my normal morning workout.

So, how did I do it? I followed the Dao (The natural way), discovering some fundamental nutritional information along the way that I would like to share. First, the gigantic meat and dairy producing industries primary goal is profit which has nothing to do with health. The majority of us are bombarded daily with misinformation for the purpose of making money. I’ll give you an example from my own life. I grew up hearing the statements; “Milk builds strong bones.” and “Milk, it does a body good.”. Now for the physiological facts. Cows milk creates an overly acidic environment in the bloodstream, our bodies respond by drawing calcium out of bones to counteract this imbalance effectively weakening bone strength. The primary protein in dairy products, casein, is a strong promoter of cancer growth. There are no nutrients unique to dairy which can not be found in healthier forms in other foods. I won’t ask you to take my word for it, research it for yourself. The information is out there, albeit often well disguised. If you’re one of the many people (like myself) who suffer from acid indigestion try a simple experiment. Give up all dairy products for five days. My indigestion disappeared completely within 48 hours. I found almond milk to be an excellent substitute.

Ready for one more ugly truth? Animal protein intake directly effects the growth rate of cancer. The book, “The China study” by T. Colin Campbell thoroughly describes a scientific study done with laboratory rats, all of which had been artificially “given” cancer. It was discovered that by lowering animal protein intake from 20% (which is equivalent to a standard western diet) to 5% the cancerous cells ceased to grow. Again, the protein found in animal products is available in other foods.

It should be noted that byproducts of meat and dairy production have a distinctly negative ecological impact. Consider water contaminated by domestic animal waste.

The healthiest diet for the human body IS the healthiest diet for the planet. Given natures penchant for always balancing, how could it be otherwise?

In summary, I lost the weight by following a whole foods, dairy free, plant based diet. Although “diet” is not the best term as I regularly consume more than 2,500 calories in a day. Hopefully I’ve sparked an interest which will lead you to a more in-depth study and a healthier life.

Caveat: I am not a health care professional. For your own safety please consult a qualified physician prior to making any dietary changes.
